At the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), graduate students are at the center of their own education. They design their learning paths, construct meaning from new information, pull from prior experience and push the boundaries of their own practice to engage meaningfully in contemporary art and design.
With 16 MFA, MA and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate programs specializing in studio, design, curatorial and pedagogical practice, MICA offers graduate students the option of complementing and individualizing their practice with academic concentrations in Curatorial Practice and Critical Studies. Designed to enhance MICA’s graduate-level liberal arts programming, these new, collaborative opportunities will create space for cross-disciplinary research and experimentation, as well as offer additional pathways for professional practice after graduation.
Critical Studies Concentration
While honing their skills as artists or designers, students can further contextualize their practice, sharpen their research skills, and write for publication. Candidates will synthesize art history, theory and research to generate new ideas informed by investigations of topics from feminism to film, architecture to urbanism. Students have the opportunity to work with world-class scholars who are MICA full-time faculty members like Ellen Lupton, José Ruiz, Monica Amor, Ian Bourland, Mikita Brottman, Firmin Debrabander, Tim Druckrey, Jennie Hirsh, Christine Manganaro and Rael Salley.
Curatorial Practice Concentration
Art and design practitioners can enhance their programs of study and prepare to enter this transforming field that increasingly is engaging new audiences and communities through the creation of exhibitions in both traditional and non-traditional venues. Candidates will analyze exhibitions and curate their own exhibitions and projects that entertain, instruct, alter perceptions and keep pace with culture.
MICA is currently accepting applications for MA, MFA, MPS, MBA/MA, and Post-Baccalaureate study. The priority deadline for most programs will be January 17, 2019. More information is available at www.mica.edu/gradadmission.
