The Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design at Georgia State University features an internationally active faculty and a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for professional careers in art and design. The programs foster critical thinking and dynamic artistic production within an interdisciplinary environment. The Welch School offers an MA in Art History, a MAEd in Art Education and an MFA in Studio Art with concentrations in Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Textiles.
– All MFA degrees are NASAD accredited
– All MFA accepted students receive full tuition waivers and monthly stipends as part of teaching assistantships
– Numerous MA/MAEd research assistantships are granted with equal benefits
Graduate assistantships are available for all students accepted into the MFA Studio programs, as well as the MA in Art History and MAEd in Art Education programs.
MFA candidates are eligible for competitive fellowships, including the premium Welch Fellowships. The fellowships fund students for the entire three years of study, in addition to their regular stipend and full tuition waiver.
Graduate students will be exposed to signature events such as international art fairs. This is the fifth consecutive year that our third-year MFA candidates will be featured in an exhibition at Aqua Art Miami. The catalog will be authored by Art History graduates, with an essay by Victoria Camblin, Editor and Artistic Director of Art Papers. This real world opportunity results in networking, exhibition opportunities, gallery representation, and the sale of their artwork. More importantly, the experience immerses our MFA students' work with the creative opportunities at the largest concentration of international art fairs in America.
The Welch Foundation supports the graduate program at GSU by sponsoring:
–The Welch Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture series, which has included Nicole Eisenman (2015 MacArthur Fellow), Amanda Ross-Ho, Lucas Blalock, Chris Wiley, Steffani Jemison, Math Bass, Ryan McLaughlin, The Propeller Group, Bibiana Obler, and Jaap Blonk, among others.
–The Artist-in-Residence program, currently with João Enxuto and Erica Love. In 2016, Radcliffe Bailey is scheduled for the residency.
– Welch Symposium, most recently "Plastic GYRE: Artists, Scientists and Activists Respond", held in partnership with The David J. Sencer CDC Museum and the Plastic Pollution Coalition. In 2017, the school will co-host the Southern Graphic Council International annual conference, highlighted by a major printmaking symposium.
The Welch Galleries support the curriculum by curating regional, national and international art exhibitions and providing a venue for solo thesis exhibitions. The galleries also host presentations and panel discussions, providing students with personal access to professional artists and scholars.
All MFA Studio majors are provided with 24-hour access to private or semi-private studio space. Graduate students have access to all of the resources of a major urban research university. The school is also one of only eleven institutions worldwide that houses the Skowhegan Lecture Archive.

Georgia State University is located in downtown Atlanta. This diverse urban campus provides access to prestigious art institutions, including the High Museum, MOCA GA, and the Atlanta Contemporary. Students are actively involved with a network of commercial galleries, alternative spaces and grassroots artist organizations, such as WonderRoot, Flux Projects, Forward Arts Foundation, Elevate Atlanta, The Creatives Project, and The Goat Farm.
