Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications to join the graduate study and research communities in anticipation of its landmark new campus.

Emily Carr University is a global leader in dedicated research for studio-based art, design, and media. We merge research, critical theory and studio practice in an interdisciplinary environment with a commitment to providing opportunities to graduate students through collaborative partnerships, industry alliances and funded research opportunities.

The Master of Applied Arts (MAA) supports rigorous practice-based creative research in a program that combines rich instruction from expert faculty with independent supervised thesis research. The MAA experience prepares students to become professional artists who take risks, think unconventionally, foster change and contribute to the global cultural economy. This two-year program draws on a continuous and abundant visiting speaker series, including dedicated individual studio critiques with renowned visiting artists. A defining component of the program is the Summer Internship / Independent Study period; this applied learning experience is developed in consultation with faculty and designed to foster professional momentum for students during their course of study.

The MAA (low-residency) is designed for practicing artists and working professionals who want to stay based in their home communities, but who wish to undertake a stimulating and rewarding course of learning alongside their professional commitments. While the three-year delivery of the program is flexible, it is not part-time. The requirements and benefits are equivalent to the on-campus program; the difference is in the mode, duration, and rhythm of delivery.

The Master of Design (MDes) is a two-year, research-oriented, interdisciplinary degree for creative professionals at the forefront of design. Students will develop unique research projects drawing on a range of possible design fields, including: Critical Design, Transformation Design, Health Design, Recreation Design, Communication Design, Industrial Design, Product and Soft Product Design, Design for Sustainability, Interaction Design, and Service Systems Design. The Master of Design degree prepares graduates to take leadership roles in established professions, or to initiate new ones.

Graduate students will have exposure to exciting opportunities emerging from the University's groundbreaking new research areas, including:
