ARCUS Research is a self-directed residency program offering uninterrupted time and a contemplative environment for creative experimentation, in-depth fieldwork, and research. The program welcomes not only artists but also curators, researchers, writers, and other practitioners in the cultural field to engage in creative discourses and activities. Located just an hour from Tokyo and near Mt. Tsukuba, ARCUS Research provides a tranquil setting and workspace where participants can reflect and deepen their creative process. Main Master programmes
Fine Arts (MFA); course director: Krist Gruijthuijsen - main tutors: Nicoline van Harskamp, Raimundas Malašauskas, Jason Dodge - tutors: Praneet Soi, Aaron Schuster, Jeroen Boomgaard - The programme retains its focus on the notions of autonomy and creation, while addressing the social and economical roles and implications of these traditional parameters of art production. The programme is structured around modules exploring the realms of language, image, object and performance-and- Design / Think Tank for visual strategies (MDes); course director: Annelys de Vet - tutors: Nikki Brörmann, Agata Jaworska, Dimitri Nieuwenhuizen, Rob Schröder, Daniel van der Velden - The department functions as a think tank for visual strategies. Students commit themselves to various cultural, social and political research based visual projects, putting together their own programme within an open curriculum and creating hybrid forms of communication that draw on their skills as writers, editors, visualizers, programmers, conceptualizers and designers. Dirty Art Department / Applied Arts (MDes); course director: Jerszy Seymour and co-course director: Catherine Geel - tutors: Clemence Seilles, Stephane Barbier Bouvet - activator: Erasmus Scherjon - The focus of the program is about developing singular practices separate to medium or subject, and giving an insight of how to place that practice into the different existing contexts of art, design, performance, writing, pizza making etc. The eventual challenge is how to create new context that is the transformation of reality. Open to designers, artists, bankers, sceptics, optimists, economists, philosophers, independent thinkers, farmers, anarchists and the curious. The department is a trip, and wherever it gets to it remembers that any space is the place. Studio for Immediate Spaces / Interior Architecture (MIA); course director: Anne Holtrop - tutors: Pascal Flammer, Sophie Krier, Tom Vandeputte - In between the logic of constructing architecture and the design of objects, we experiment and explore the immediate space. This programme welcomes all those who are eager to experiment and explore the spaces around us, to examine how these are made up, what they consist of and how people use and relate to them. The course is open to all students with a bachelor’s degree in Design, Interior Design, Architecture, Fine Arts, or other relevant fields, or with comparable work experience. Participants will become experts in the immediate spaces around us. New temporary Master programmes 2014–2016 Designing Democracy (MIA); course directors: Max Cohen de Lara and David Mulder van der Vegt - In a time in which confidence in democracy is under increasing pressure – from the Eurocrisis to the American shutdown and from the Occupy movement to the streets of Athens – this program aims to think about the question of the future of democracy through design. Directed by architecture studio XML students will collaborate within an intensive environment with artists, architects, journalists, politicians, scholars and other thinkers. Cure Master (MFA or MDes); course directors: Martijn Engelbregt and Theo Tegelaers - Health is one of the most important things in life and is high on the political and social agendas. How do we deal with this theme on an individual, collective and (inter)national level, now and in the future? We will explore the philosophical origin and cultural significance and experiment with new proposals on the concept of health on physical, social and emotional levels. The programme approaches this from the perspective of art and the figure of the artist in particular. System D Academy (MFA or MDes); course directors: Cynthia Hathaway and Melle Smets - The course explores informal and self-organizing systems. By learning from System D (Débrouillard), we will seek alternatives to the formalized systems we are presently locked into by exploring the informal undercurrent in formalized countries as well as the apparent, highly dynamic System D found around the world. We develop projects to visualize the strength of the informal, and its implications for future models of living.  | ||
