Perfect for emerging and diverse individuals looking to advance their artistic and curatorial skills. Through a series of talks, conversations, and presentations with professional curators, artists, and thinkers, and site visits to museums, galleries, studios, and alternative spaces, participants will be able to engage with the local art community and advance their careers as curators. This retreat focuses specifically on the Los Angeles’ art scene while participants develop transferable skills as a curator.

Program
Elam School of Fine Arts is one of the most highly regarded places to study fine arts in New Zealand.
We approach fine art education at Elam in a distinct manner. Our postgraduate studios operate from an interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary perspective. Painters, sculptors, interactive artists, video artists, photographers and other creative practitioners work alongside each other. It is our view that such cross-disciplinary interaction reflects the reality of much contemporary creative visual art practice. Critical discourse on artistic practice and an emphasis on analysis and self-reflection contribute to an understanding of contemporary art located within a larger cultural, social and political context.
Master of Fine Arts (MFA)
The two-year MFA program is taught in an intimate environment with international connections through its renowned faculty and Elam International Artist in Residence programme. Guest artists support the faculty and engage students in contemporary creative initiatives worldwide.
With three options for the second year of study including studio practice, research portfolio or thesisyou are able to design a pathway through your study that best supports your individual interests. The program comprises individual supervised independent projects, lectures and seminars. Well-equipped workshops for photography, film and video, sound and other computer-based work as well as for wood, printmaking, casting and fabrication are open to all students. Each student is provided a studio space, and all teachers at the school are available as supervisors.
Over the two-year curriculum, the MFA program includes many opportunities to discuss the artist's practice and to engage with the arts industry nationally and internationally. At the end of the MFA programme all students work towards a final group show that has launched many artists into their careers both in New Zealand and internationally.

Elam School of Fine Arts is located in the heart of Auckland City, which is ranked third out of 221 world cities for quality of living in the 2012 Mercer Quality of Living Survey. Auckland's harbour setting, magnificent beaches and verdant bush make it a great place to study and work, while the University's close proximity to New Zealand's most respected galleries and cultural centres enables staff and students to rub shoulders with leading practitioners in their field. Within the Creative Arts and Industries campus, together with the School of Architecture and Planning, School of Music and Dance Studies programme our school is part of a thriving creative focal point in the country.

The National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries (NICAI) is a respected centre for creativity, research, teaching and practice at the University of Auckland. At NICAI you can study architecture, urban planning and urban design, dance, fine arts, music and sonic arts. We offer a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes and a wealth of opportunities for research in the creative arts and industries.
