AKV|St.Joost: strong history and reputation, situated in the centre of Dutch design

By studying a master course at AKV|St.Joost you will join a community of inspiring professionals, both tutors and students, from different disciplines and different nationalities. The curriculum allows you to further develop your identity and your role in society as artist or designer, and build a solid foundation and network for a lifelong professional career. At an academy with a strong history and reputation, situated in the centre of Dutch design.

Tutors at the Master programmes are among others:
Photography: Martine StigJuul HondiusNoud Heerkens, Marga Rotteveel
Graphic Design: Petr van Blokland, Matthias Noordzij, Simon Davies, Max Bruinsma

Your ambition
You have an ambition to further develop your identity and your role in society as artist or designer. And eager to share and expand your practice, knowledge and skills both in your own field of research and in that of other disciplines.

The programme
You will deepen your practice through practical and theoretical research, discussion and feedback sessions with peers and tutors. Also you will discover other roles and attitudes within your practice, such as the role of curator, initiator or organizer. Renowned teachers and (guest) lecturers coach and challenge you to expand your artistic possibilities, supported by facilities such as excellent workshops and shared studios. The multidisciplinary encounters in lectures and excursions both enrich your experience and represent an attitude of understanding and collaboration that is an integral part of contemporary art and design.

The students
Your fellow students are the critical forum that allows you to organize fruitful reflections as a group of peers. They will also be the start of your global network. In this multidisciplinary and international perspective your own vision will be tested and enhanced.

Master of Fine Art
The Master of Fine Art concentrates on the less self-evident aspects of being an artist. Students share a joint studio at the academy as a starting point. In the joint taught programme we endeavor to investigate art and the artistic calling as a non-homogenous field of cultural practices. The curriculum emphasizes extra-disciplinary thinking, offers theoretical frameworks, and stimulates a reflective, critical attitude in relation to the art world and the personal oeuvre.

Master of Photography
Point of departure in the Master of Photography is the documentary discourse and the relationship photography has with reality. The documentary concept, which is an essential element of photography, is one of the main subjects of debate and research in the programme. The focus is on new forms of photography in the relatively autonomous contexts of the photo book, the exhibition, the moving image or the internet project.

Master of Graphic design
The master of Graphic Design takes an academic approach to graphic design, objectifying the considerations of the design process and making all instances thereof subject of argumentation. This will result into better reasoning and subsequently higher standards of the work. The course takes graphic design to a higher level through methodology of research-founded argumentation.

Master of Animation
The Master of Animation is a one-year master course that focuses on the broad role of animation within the context of media, art, design, games and science. From this orientation on new contexts and application ranges of animation, students will be able to specialize individually, based on a clear insight into their own ambitions and possibilities.

We invite you to apply for one of the AKV|St.Joost Master courses in before July 1.
