Portland State University’s School of Art + Design invites applications to Contemporary Art Practice MFA degrees in Social Practice and Studio Practice.

MFA in Social Practice
The Art and Social Practice MFA is a three-year, flexible residency program that combines individual artistic practice, group work, community partnerships, and experiential learning. The program’s blend of critical and professional practice, progressive pedagogy, collaborative social engagement, and transdisciplinary exploration produces an immersive educational environment. Graduating students each produce a public graduate thesis project, an in-depth written text exploring a relevant connection to their practice, and a public artist lecture that surveys their work in the program. Each student may also produce a book for the Social Practice Reference Points series on a prominent theme, person, or as a workbook. Learn more.

MFA in Studio Practice
The Studio Practice MFA program is built around a core of research-intensive creative investigation. This two-year, full-residency program is dedicated to interdisciplinary experimentation and the exploration of ideas through the experience of making. Students are supported in a range of disciplines, from the traditional to the emerging, as they consider the various ways art can live in and beyond the studio. We provide a variety of resources and experiences, including close ties with resident faculty, dialogue with visiting artists and scholars, seminars in current issues and contemporary art history, and exhibition and travel opportunities. Students collaboratively produce the publication [STUDIO], a document of the MFA Studio visiting artist lecture series that includes in-depth interviews with each visiting artist, as well as written and visual student responses. Learn more.

Both MFA concentrations host regular public lectures, workshops, and projects with visiting artists as a core component of the program curriculum.

Visiting artists include:
Layla Ali, Julie Ault, Andrea Bowers, Daniel Bozhkov, Brian Bress, Luis Camnitzer, Y0UNG-HAE CHANG (HEAVY INDUSTRIES), Anna Craycroft, Critical Art Ensemble, Julia Dault, Mark Dion, Sam Durant, Hasan Elahi, Thomas Gokey, Kenneth Goldsmith, Sara Greenberger, Léonie Guyer, Rafferty, Fritz Haeg, Edgar Heap of Birds, Pablo Helguera, Richard Jackson, Chris Johanson, Stanya Kahn, George Kuchar, Rick Lowe, Lucky Dragons, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, Euan Macdonald, Anissa Mack, Carmen Montoya (Ghana Think Tank), Laurel Nakadate, Joseph Park, Paul Pfeiffer (co-sponsored with PSU’s Department of Architecture), Paul Ramirez Jonas, Yvonne Rainer (co-sponsored with PNCA), Pedro Reyes, Barry Sanders, Buster Simpson, Frances Stark, Stephanie Syjuco, Cassie Thorton, Transformazium, Jennifer West, Wendy White, Hank Willis Thomas, James Yood, and Andrea Zittel.

Online applications are due February 1.

PSU’s School of Art + Design is a vital part of Portland’s progressive, nationally recognized arts community. Graduates from the program come from a variety of diverse backgrounds and have gone on to successfully engage with the expanded field of contemporary art through traditional and unorthodox avenues.
