In 1987 the École du MAGASIN was founded as one of the activities of the art center, the MAGASIN in Grenoble. Being the first international curatorial studies program in Europe, it was set up to provide a professional environment for a rigorous combination of research and practice.
By providing the participants with a nine months hands-on experience in organizing a curatorial project, the École du MAGASIN gives a direct approach to curatorial practices. The program presents a wide variety of insights into what curating can be and become in the future through a series of tutorials, workshops, seminars and visits with professionals from different backgrounds. The École is in constant flux, learning and adapting to the necessities of young art professionals today. The program offers tools and experiences to enhance the participant's professional capabilities while also enabling them to strengthen their critical and reflexive point of view.
Application requirements
The École du MAGASIN training program is open to candidates who have obtained the equivalent of a Master's degree or who attest to relevant professional experience. Candidates should have a general knowledge of the production and mediation of contemporary art and be open to the diversity of current artistic positions, spaces and languages. The capacity to find solutions to a wide variety of challenges is very important. Strong personal motivation, creative mind-set, entrepreneurial emphasis and the capacity to work in a team are characteristics that are highly valued. Candidates must be fluent in English and have basic notions of French.
Tutorial committee
The tutorial committee members are Yves Aupetitallot (director of the MAGASIN-CNAC), Quim Packard (coordinator), and guest advisors nominated for each session. The role of the committee includes defining methodology and educational aims, assuring the coherence of each session's intentions, overseeing the reality of various constraints (budget, schedule, feasibility), and maintaining a level of accomplishment.
In order to enrich and strengthen the session's curatorial project, trips and visits are organized and professionals from the field of art and other disciplines are invited to contribute as advisors or guest lecturers.

Partnership with the Art and Design School–Grenoble–Valence
École du MAGASIN's participants take part in joint seminars with ÉSAD students working with professionals in the field (artists, theoreticians, curators), curate shows as intermediary projects in the ÉSAD's gallery, and have access to its resources. Joint seminars with students of art history from the Université Pierre Mendès-France are also part of the program, thus providing a wide variety of collaborative opportunities with the rich and complex locally based, internationally out-reaching arts community.
