The School of the Arts at Loughborough University provides a dynamic, creative and technically supportive environment for postgraduate study in art and design. Supported by 77 full- and part-time academic staff and technical tutors, your learning will fully combine theory and practice.
Our aim is to foster opportunities for critical debate, the acquisition of technical and research skills, and the heightening of creative practice in order to enhance your future employment prospects. This is primarily facilitated through research-led teaching and further nurtured by a programme of visiting lecturers.
The school is ranked amongst the top university art and design providers in national surveys, and has consistently achieved high teaching and research quality ratings. The School's facilities are outstanding, with spacious studios and excellent technical provision, supported by highly skilled technical tutors.
Facilities include computer suite for animation, motion capture rig, digital video, sound generation and 3D modelling, RP facility, large format digital printing, workshop facilities for woodworking, silversmithing, welding and bronze casting, stone carving and resin mould making, for intaglio processes, silkscreen, lithography, photography, textile printing and weaving, laser cutting, CAD/CAM embroidery and digital jacquard technology.
We offer four postgraduate taught programmes which encompass art, design, theory and performance by practice.
MA Art and the Public Sphere is an inter-disciplinary course. It is aimed at artists, curators and writers whose interests lie within interrogating and exploring contemporary art and its relation to the notion of the public sphere of opinion formation, its relationship to the history of Western democracy, and its role in enabling free discussion and political action.
The programme develops the discourse from art in public space to a broader interrogation of what we might understand to be public and considers art, art criticism and curatorial practices as an integral and vital aspect of culture in the 21st century. It operates by bringing together practice and theory as praxis.
MA Art & Design Studio Practice provides an opportunity for students who wish to develop the full potential of a practice-based project proposal either as research or professional preparation. It is designed to enable access to a range of subject disciplines, workshops and external links, as appropriate to an individual project. We offer specialist facilities in Textiles, 3D Design, Photography, Fine Art and Visual Communication, and welcome applications that cross the boundaries of traditional specialisms.

MA Studio Ceramics: Methodologies and Practice provides an opportunity to study studio ceramics in-depth enabling students to advance individual skills, knowledge and understanding in creative, practical, and technical aspects of the subject within a workshop and studio environment.
We offer well-equipped studios with a wide range of gas, electric, oil, and wood fired (anagama) kilns, salt firing and raku including glaze laboratory. As an artist and maker you will be challenged to examine and extend your own practice, to develop your knowledge and critical understanding of the subject and its history, and to apply it in the wider professional context. MA/MSc 2D and 3D Visualisation aims to develop a broad approach to visualisation within an increasingly diverse and competitive market. It will provide you with opportunities to develop a personalised visual language with which to articulate an engagement with visual thinking.
This is a collaborative programme between the School of the Arts and the Design School. Visualisation through 2D and 3D drawing, modelling, prototyping, and computer-based activity is a focus and feature of teaching and research within the School of the Arts and the Design School. Outcomes take the form of portfolios of visualisation activity, oral presentations and written reports. The MA or MSc award will be dependent on the nature of the final project.
