Program profile
The Montclair State University MFA in Studio Art is a rigorous two-year interdisciplinary program designed to offer artists a critical, conceptual and intellectual framework to experiment and develop their practice. Offering a wide array of comprehensive and individualized training in art theory, history, criticism and practice, the program provides students with vital skills to pursue their artistic vision and work across a diversity of mediums. Throughout the program, students are immersed in a dynamic environment of creative dialogue with leading faculty and one-on-one mentoring with visiting artists and critics.

All students have access to a spacious private studio, plus usage of expansive facilities in all art and design areas, including photography, video, sculpture, ceramics, painting and more. The program offers exhibition opportunities for students to showcase their progress at a dedicated MFA gallery as well as a major graduation exhibition held in New York City's Chelsea gallery district. Leveraging our close proximity to New York City (just 14 miles away), the curriculum includes weekly field trips to leading art institutions and an ever-increasing number of professional networking opportunities.

The program further prepares artists to develop thriving and sustainable careers that advance their art. We place a special emphasis on training and individualized advice on portfolio development, project planning and management, budgeting and financial management, fundraising and grant writing, website development and marketing, legal issues for artists, pricing and selling work, among others.

Merit-based scholarships are available to a select number of candidates.
