The Werkplaats Typografie (WT) is a two-year Master's programme centered on practical assignments, workshops, seminars and self-initiated projects. It serves as a meeting place for graphic designers interested in research and dialogue. Participants work in a professionally equipped studio accessible 24 hours a day, supervised by leading graphic designers. The aim of the program is for talented students to develop an independent design practice.
Artistic, discursive and practical qualities are developed through self-conducted group projects, commissions by external clients, individual projects and diverse workshops, guided by external experts, including artists, designers, programmers, cooks and philosophers. This programme of group activities and discussion alternates with studio days and individual talks.
The WT programme stimulates critical reflection on the individuals' own work considered in relation to the broader professional field of graphic design as well as within a wider cultural context. At the Werkplaats Typografie, graphic design is understood as an approach rather than an outcome—such an idea of graphic design challenges various forms of publishing and incorporates an expanded notion of the typographical.
