The MFA Art Practice program at the School of Visual Arts is now accepting applications for summer 2014. The immersive 66-credit degree program is composed of a rigorous curriculum delivered via a series of three intensive summer sessions coupled with rich-media interactive online coursework in the fall and spring semesters. In the summer, participants further their body of work during dedicated studio time, while also attending lectures, seminars and critiques and engaging with the diverse cultural offerings and resources that the city of New York and the vibrant SVA community provide.

The programThe Art Practice program offers a low-residency, cross-disciplinary approach to an MFA degree. In this post-conceptual, post-studio era, artists pursue their practice by engaging an idea first, and then developing a plan that may involve a combination of media, technologies and techniques. We encourage participants to explore traditional art media as well as techniques and technologies not typically associated with artmaking.
We want to help prepare artists to feel secure in their ability to produce works of art using traditional and nontraditional media in both traditional and nontraditional settings. To accomplish this, we bring together a carefully selected, small group of MFA candidates who will devote three successive summers and the two intervening years to a program in which they will engage with artists, designers, art historians and museum curators. Faculty members include: David A. Ross, Suzanne Anker, Beth B, Dara Birnbaum, Kathy Brew, Eric and Heather ChanSchatz, Laura F. Gibellini, Claire Gilman, Thyrza Nichols Goodeve, Johan Grimonprez, Daniel Kunitz, Alix Lambert, Steven Henry Madoff, Ernesto Pujol, Tim Rollins, Sarah Sharp, Gary Simmons, Stefan Saffer, Jovana Stokic, Mark Tribe and Robin Winters. Visiting artists, guest lecturers and mentors include: Vito Acconci, Cory Arcangel, Alice Aycock, AA Bronson, Diego Cortez, Stephen Ellis, Joy Garnett, Liam Gillick, James Gleick, Dan Graham, Natalie Jeremijenko, Terence Koh, Mingwei Lee, Maria Nordman, Tony Oursler, Izhar Patkin, Carolee Schneemann, Lorna Simpson, Philippe Vergne, Cecilia Vicuña, Terry Winters and Carrie Mae Weems.
VisitMFA Art Practice is located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, at 335 West 16th Street. Please contact the Art Practice office to make an appointment to speak with a representative of the program and tour the facilities.
