The Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design draws from a diverse student body, interdisciplinary study opportunities, and international semester studios to prepare students for global practice in the private and public sectors. Through advanced study in architecture, leading to the NAAB-accredited professional Master of Architecture (MArch) degree and the post-professional Master of Science degrees in architecture, our students are well positioned to assume leadership roles in the design and development of the contemporary built environment.
The MArch program focuses on the synthetic activity of design while preparing students to become skillful and socially responsible leaders in practice, education, and public service. International semesters (in Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Helsinki, and Shanghai) are an integral part of the program. Strong components of landscape architecture, urban design, building technologies, and architectural history and theory are woven throughout the curriculum. Interdisciplinary work with other divisions of the university and dual degree options are available, including in business administration, construction management, landscape architecture, social work, and urban design. The MArch program is open to individuals who hold baccalaureate degrees in architecture, as well as those with degrees in other areas of undergraduate study. The duration of study will vary according to prior course work in architecture and the quality and complexity of work in an applicant's portfolio. Two post-professional programs—the Master of Science in Architectural Studies (MSAS) and the Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design (MSAAD) degree—provide the opportunity to engage in advanced specializations. The MSAS program offers research specialization in either Architectural Pedagogy or the History and Culture of Architecture and requires a minimum of 30 credits. The MSAAD program allows individuals who already hold NAAB-accredited professional degrees in architecture to pursue advanced design studies, research, and teaching preparation, and requires a minimum of 36 credits.
