VCUarts Department of Painting + Printmaking invites applications to its MFA program, a progressive arts program that supports talented and curious students dedicated to exploring the conceptual as well as technical issues imbedded in painting and printmaking today. For admission for fall 2014, the application deadline is January 15, 2014

VCUarts Department of Painting + Printmaking, a national leader in fostering innovative studio research and practice, is committed to broadening the understanding of two-dimensional media in all its forms. Graduate students engage in two years of full-time course work and studio research aimed at a sustainable profession of artistic inquiry. Applications from artists seeking to cross boundaries between disciplines are welcome.
The graduate program is based on intensive studio practice at an advanced level in the areas of painting, drawing, printmaking, and digital media. The program is highly selective and is presently limited to fifteen participants. Our graduate program was recently ranked among the top ten best graduate painting programs in the country by US News & World Report. This ranking is based on the professional reputation of our faculty and on the outstanding accomplishments of the department's alumni.
The MFA in Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting and Printmaking requires the successful completion of sixty credits and is usually undertaken in two years of full-time study. Most of the credits are earned in studio areas and are augmented by related courses, including Art and Critical Theory and a graduate seminar that meets weekly to address topics related to contemporary art practice. In addition, we support an active and ambitious program of visiting artists and lecturers; leading figures in the world of contemporary art visit throughout the year to present lectures about their work, conduct workshops, and meet with students. Each graduate student works in one of fifteen spacious, individual painting studios that are housed in the Fine Arts Building.
VCUarts Painting + Printmaking MFA Program highlights:–Excellent teaching mentorships with leading practitioners, writers and curators–Rigorous individual and group critiques, and concept seminars–Generous individual and private studio space–Merit-based Graduate Assistantships, providing full tuition support and nine-month stipend–Professional practice—regular curriculum/thesis related exhibitions and a bi-annual MFA Summer Show in NYC–Opportunities to teach undergraduate classes–Travel grants for professional presentation of studio research–Outstanding technical resources including a comprehensive wood shop and state-of-the-art print media facilities–World-class research library and access to history, knowledge and ideas
