The Slade School of Fine Art is currently welcoming MPhil/PhD applications for 2014 entry.
The Slade is a vibrant, world-leading, international art school at the forefront of art education and with an established history of excellence in research. At the centre of UCL—ranked in the top ten of research universities in the world—our doctoral programme offers a specialist doctorate in Fine Art, and we are unique in offering the opportunity for interdisciplinary research across the range of subjects offered by UCL, from Anthropology to Zoology. Current Slade interdisciplinary research projects include the Materials Research Project; Cities Methodologies; Transnational Slade; Land Art and the Culture of Landscape; Bronze Lab; Pain and the Image. Slade staff specialisms include painting, sculpture, fine art media (including film, video, electronic media, photography, print, publishing, performance, sound and the written word). We are seeking applications from those who aspire to contribute to the Slade's research culture and we encourage doctoral students to extend the boundaries of their research through questioning, interrogating, and exploring the limits of their imagination. Our doctoral programme is designed to enable students to develop their research through the making of art, practices of writing and scholarly investigation. The programme includes individual supervision, a bi-weekly forum of research presentations, and an annual event and public exhibition at the Slade Research Centre, Woburn Square. We encourage creative approaches to writing as a practice for artists through our innovative and internationally renowned Creative Thesis course and we also support the development of conference presentations, provide opportunities for BA/BFA-level teaching experience, and teacher training through the UCL Centre for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching. Our Slade workshops, which include print, bookbinding, electronic media, sculpture, photography, film, video and sound, are augmented by other research facilities within UCL, including its libraries; museums including UCL Art Museum; and Research Centres, such as the Institute of Making. All MPhil/PhD students have access to booking space at the Slade Research Centre, Woburn Square, to test their research. We offer a choice between the following three MPhil/PhD options:Practice-led: a thesis of studio practice plus a written report of 15,000-40,000 words (10,000-20,000 words, MPhil). Practice-related: a written thesis of 60,000-80,000 words with studio practice (35,000-45,000 words, MPhil). Written thesis only: a written thesis of 80,000-100,000 words (50,000-60,000 words, MPhil). MPhil/PhD students at the Slade are supervised by a team headed by a primary supervisor within the Slade; second supervisors may be drawn from other departments within UCL. The Slade is part of the AHRC-funded London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP) which brings together three leading UK research organisations: King's College, London (KCL), the School of Advanced Study (SAS) and University College London (UCL). The LAHP AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership will fund and train up to 400 postgraduate students over five annual cohorts from 2014. As well as funding for studentships and shared doctoral training, this will open up additional opportunities for interdisciplinary supervision for Slade students across these three leading research institutions. Application deadline and proceduresThe first deadline for applications and the deadline for UCL/AHRC scholarships is 25 November 2013. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be on 22 and 23 January 2014. The second application deadline is 10 March 2014, interviews 29 April 2014. Both application deadlines are for entry in September 2014.
