The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's (SAIC) Master of Arts in New Arts Journalism program reinterprets and transforms the skills of a traditional journalist into the multitasking demands of a contemporary arts journalist where text and image are frequently intertwined, and a journalist is often the initial writer, designer, and editor of his or her feature. Unlike journalism schools that add an arts emphasis, SAIC is a vibrant school of art and design in which New Arts Journalism students can combine the in-depth study of arts and journalism, and work closely with artists, art historians, and cultural critics.
– The Master of Arts in New Arts Journalism program focuses on refining the technical aspects of writing in print and online, and provides workshop critiques by peers and faculty.
– The program's curriculum includes courses in print production and design, web-based publication, and the history and theory of contemporary art. Coursework also covers the format of reviews, features, critical essays, interviews, investigative reporting, features, and opinion pieces—in the context of cultural journalism.
– The New Arts Journalism faculty is composed of working critics, journalists, and designers from major local and national publications.
– Numerous publishing opportunities are available through resources such as SAIC's award-winning F Newsmagazine, local and national media, and class-created publications.
– A second-year internship through SAIC's Co-operative Education Internship Program allows students to work in a professional environment with various local and national companies. New Arts Journalism graduates have completed internships at National Public Radio in Chicago, The Nation, National Veterans Art Museum, Monique Meloche Gallery, Proximity magazine, Alarm Press, and various publications and public relations firms concentrating on promoting arts and cultural institutions.
