Pratt Institute's MFA in Digital Arts

Pratt's MFA in Digital Arts is a 60-credit-hour, two-year degree, with three concentrations, interactive arts, digital imaging, and digital animation and motion arts. Within the context of new media and networked culture, students produce work that is conceptually and technically sophisticated and positioned within a contemporary art discourse. In addition to their participation in departmental and campus wide events, DDA students are proactive in working with outside galleries and institutions to mount exhibitions and hold lectures and performances.

A rigorous concentration on professional practices leads DDA graduates to advanced work in a variety of creative new media fields. Students, faculty and alumni have been represented in major national and international galleries, museums, festivals and conferences, such as Bitforms Gallery, Postmasters, and Arts Electronica; and have received numerous awards, including New York Foundation for the Arts grants, Banff residencies, Academy Awards, Aaron Siskind Fellowships, Emmy Awards, Eyebeam Fellowships, New York State Council Grants, and SIGGRAPH Awards.  Domestic and international artists come together to study within the concentrations of interactive artsdigital animation/motion artsdigital imaging, and DDA/SILS (School of Information and Library Science) dual degree. When applying, students choose a specific concentration and begin their study within cohort groups, however outcomes from each concentration are broad and diverse.

– The Interactive Arts program covers a vast array of topics including physical computing, augmented reality, interactive installation, performance, and iOS application development.

– The Digital Imaging curriculum provides a platform for students to produce artworks that span bits to atoms, including 3D printed sculptures, electronic books, installation art and multi-application compositing.

– Digital Animation and Motion Arts students create work from storyboarding to post-production that ranges from screen-based animation to time-based installations.

– The Digital Arts/Information and Library Science Dual Degree program addresses the need for students in both fields to acquire high-level skills and knowledge in using digital tools for the creation, exhibition, use and preservation of digital arts and information environments.

In all concentrations students develop skills in programming and 3D modeling while concurrently contextualizing their practice through intensive courses in critical New Media theory. Throughout their studies, students work with the departments' internship coordinator to explore opportunities, for academic credit, at studios, galleries, arts institutions and companies in the metropolitan New York area. Past DDA students have interned at Bitforms Gallery, Blue Sky Studios, Eyebeam Art & Technology Center, The Mill, Psyop, Transfer Gallery, R/Greenberg Associates and many more.

Since 1987 as of the first degree-granting programs in the field, Pratt's Department of Digital Arts (DDA) has been engaging students in the extraordinary potential of a combined art and technological practice. Located in Myrtle Hall, a new state of the art facility on Pratt Institute's 25 acre Brooklyn campus, students are fully immersed in the creation of artwork informed by and utilizing technologies of the digital age.

Pratt Institute is currently ranked #2 in animation on the East Coast, and #9 in the nation, by Animation Career Review and is ranked among the top schools by BusinessWeek and DesignIntelligence.
